Project Director HS2 - The Stoke Route

Alan James served as Project Director and Lead Adviser to a project driven by the City of Stoke-on-Trent, which is designed to enable the UK’s proposed High Speed 2 railway to serve more cities, to save £5 billion capital cost, and to allow services to start 7 years earlier than planned.

An Expert Alliance team, assembled and led by Alan, devised the strategic plan for the Stoke Route and instructed the detailed railway engineering, economics, urban development, project finance, policy, legal and other specialist members of the team. Expert Alliance directed the whole team and produced all the outputs.

This project secured high speed rail services to the City of Stoke-on-Trent, which would otherwise have been bypassed, and its economy severely damaged, by the first domestic high speed railway to be built in Britain. Official confirmation of HS2 service to Stoke-on-Trent was
published by DfT on 09 March 2018, as part of the Crewe Hub project.

The rationale for the project is summarised in this
video.
